Apple Orchard

WELCOME!

Welcome to a project that surrounds us by trees that: fill our bellies; improve our health; tell us stories; and give us space to be, and become. These roots hold the keys to our future while honoring our past

WELCOME TO THE GIVING TREES PROJECT!

A Vision of Growth

Check out some of our goals for the life of this project ...

Picking Apples in Orchard

These Trees Give...

Trees can provide so much more than we realize! Take a look below at what a City Lot filled with fruit trees can bring to our neighborhood...

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 recommends fresh fruit and vegetable intake as part of a healthy dietary pattern to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic disease & meet nutrient needs.

BUT... barriers to fruit and vegetable intake disproportionately impacts: low-income neighborhoods & communities of color

Empower
Growth Through Green Space

Every forest started with a handful of trees and although we are focusing on our first 1-2 hubs now, here is how we hope to see this project progressing, with your help, into a forest of impact for our community...

Did You Know...

Urban green spaces are spaces that allow for health promoting activities, such as physical activity, or rest and relaxation to take place and improve the quality of life of urban dwellers.

Setting Roots

Check out the first 2 hubs we are raising money for...

A diet rich in vegetables & fruits can: lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease & stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower the risk of eye and digestive problems and has a positive effect on blood sugar

AND... low income adults  are 5 times more likely to report being of fair or poor health and have higher rates of: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other chronic disorders.

Sustainable Impact

What we plant today changes what we have access to tomorrow...

Did You Know...

Urban green spaces counteract the urban heat island effect, and so  can reduce energy costs of cooling buildings.

AND... Highly developed urban areas can experience mid afternoon temperatures that are 15 -20 degrees warmer than the surrounding vegetated areas.

What Is a Hub?

Small pockets of Fruit, activation, and access sprinkled throughout our community

Reimagined Vacant Lots:

2 vacant city lots that are unified and revitalized into active green space

3

Micro Access Points:

4

Access to Fresh Fruit:

Fruit! each hub will feature 50+ of a different fruit variety that will be free to our community once in season

Apples 2.png

Example

Apples & Amphitheater:

A small community amphitheater surrounded on all sides by Apple trees where we hope to see our community hold small outdoor performances and plays, and of course each tree hosts a place sit beneath its canopy and the story of one of our community giving trees

Each hub will house a different park/resource that provides a different space that promotes gathering, getting outside, or getting active.

Activation & Access:

These double lots will be sprinkled strategically throughout our community creating multiple "hubs" of food and activation

5

Stories, History, Memories:

These Hubs are living galleries hosting our communities stories at each tree.

6

These hubs are meant to be utilized by: our community, local schools, local orgs, etc as a place to gather, educate, or simple be

Engagement:

7

By spacing these hubs out a bit we hope to bring hope, beauty & access to a larger foot print, but also encourgae our community members to walk, or bike ride, hub to hub to access their many resources, workshops, events, and more

Community United:

Urban Greenery minimizes air, water, and noise pollution, and may offset greenhouse gas emissions through C02 absorption.

AND... Lower income children experience  higher rates of asthma, heart conditions, hearing problems, digestive disorders, and elevated blood lead levels.
